Case Studies

Sameer (name changed to respect privacy) is a 20 year old. One night Sameer was travelling by bus which met with a serious accident. Sameer was impaled by a 1 inch wide rod that entered through the front of his head, went through his mouth, and exited thru the bottom of his neck. This damaged his upper spine but missed many vital brain centres. What made this even more challenging was that the accident occurred more than 200kms away from SPARSH Hospital. He was brought into the Casualty Resuscitation Room at SPARSH Hospital. He was in a lot of pain. This created tremendous agony and restlessness. He was in shock. It became critical to stabilise him so that his movements did not aggravate the already serious life threatening injury. In addition to this it was critical to diagnose the extent of internal injuries and to detect the degree of proximity to vital centres. He was stabilised and transferred to the Operation Suite. The emergency response team was in place to ensure that the necessary life support systems were in place. During surgery he had to undergo many different types of complex surgeries and spent close to three months in the ICU with great success. He was discharged about 4 months after he was admitted. Today Manish has recovered fully and is back on the road to finishing his engineering degree.
