Case Studies

Dr. Ganesh (name changed to respect privacy) is a 65 years old medical practitioner running his own clinic in Karnataka. He developed a bilateral knee pain that gradually worsened. At the end of 5 years the pain had escalated to an acute level. He couldn't stand or work. Out of sheer helplessness he shut down his clinic and decided to stay at home. He thought everything had come to an end. He also developed bow legs which added to the extreme discomfort as well as created social embarrassment for him. He was at the lowest point in his life. Well wishers suggested surgery, but he declined. Even though he was a doctor he was afraid of surgery. Tentatively he came to SPARSH Hospital and consulted with Dr Patil and Dr Chandrasekar. Dr Chandrasekar and his team did a thorough evaluation and recommended Total Knee Replacement. Post a four hour bilateral single stage total knee joint replacement he was on epidural anaesthesia and hence was absolutely pain free. And this was there for three days. He sat up on the same day of the operation. On the following day, with support, he was able to get up and walk. He chose to stay back till his sutures were removed as he was from north Karnataka. Six months after surgery he reopened his clinic and is seeing patients. His experience was so good that he now recommends the same procedure to his own patients whenever he sees similar problems.

Sita (name changed to respect privacy) is a 40 year old housewife. She had rheumatoid arthritis and took a lot of medication to control the medication. After visiting a string of hospitals and she underwent several surgeries. Everyone she was close to discouraged her from taking further medical intervention. But the pain was agonising. Eventually she became bed ridden. She developed deformities not only in her knees but also in her shoulders, fingers and feet. People told her any further surgery will be useless and that her body will not be able to handle it. She lost al hope and thought that she will never walk again. Unable to see her like this some of her relatives went to her and insisted that she comes to SPARSH Hospital for a consolation. She came in on a wheelchair. She couldn't even manage a single step. She was admitted for a bilateral single stage total knee joint replacement surgery. Under epidural anaesthesia she went though a painless procedure. With a low haemoglobin level she had to receive blood transfusions. Post operative the change was dramatic. She couldn't believe that she was walking three days after the surgery. It was an emotional moment for her family as along with her, they too had lost hope that she would never walk again. She was discharged 10 days post the surgery. Seven months later she remains elated at the life changing decision that she took and the happiness and freedom that came with it.
