SPORTS MEDICINE AND SHOULDER SURGERY

The Sports Injury Service at SPARSH Hospital provides a comprehensive and holistic approach to the early diagnosis and management of sports injuries to enable an early return to sporting activities. Participation in sports is considered an indicator of healthy living but occasionally injuries do occur. Elite sportspersons are prone to injuries due to the intensity of their participation in the sport and regular practice sessions. The commonly injured joints are Shoulder, Knee, Elbow and Wrist joint. The Sports Medicine team consists of two specialised surgeons (Dr K.N.Subramanian and Dr. Prasant Tejwani) and a group of highly trained Sports Physiotherapists. 

The Service offers surgical management of the following common injuries.

1. Knee - Ligament injuries (Anterior and Posterior Cruciate ligaments)
2. Knee – Meniscus tears
3. Knee - Patella dislocation
4. Joint Cartilage damage
5. Shoulder – recurrent dislocations
6. Shoulder – Rotator cuff injury

8. Elbow - osteoarthritis
9. Elbow - Tennis Elbow/Golfer’s Elbow
10. Wrist – Triangular fibrocartilage tear
11. Arthritis of the hand joints
12. Fractures around the shoulder, elbow, wrist and knee joint

Our close proximity to various specialised diagnostic services (Radiographs, CT and MRI scan and Bone scans) in the campus and our close association with allied specialities allows us to offer a unique service and tailor our treatment to the individual needs of our patients.

Dr.K.N.Subramanian is an Orthopaedic surgeon with special interest in Orthopaedic Sports Injury Surgery, Knee Surgery and Upper limb surgery. He has been awarded a Certificate of Completion of Training in Orthopaedics by the regulatory body of the United Kingdom called General Medical Council. He is licensed to practice Specialist orthopaedic surgery.

About Spine

The Spine Service at SPARSH Hospital is a specialised unit with expertise in the non-operative and operative management of spinal disorders from the cervical spine (neck) to the lumbo-sacral spine (lower back). The service believes in and practices a holistic approach to the management of spinal disorders. In keeping with this ideology a multi-disciplinary approach is followed. In addition to the two surgeons (Dr LG Gowrishankar Swamy and Dr Thomas Kishen), the Spine Service team is constituted by physiotherapists, pain counsellor, nurses and orthotists.

About Joint Replacement

SPARSH Hospital is uniquely positioned to offer the finest comprehensive joint replacement care. Hip and Knee Replacement Surgery - The team is extensively trained in this field and have between them decades of successful operative experience. In addition to their inherent medical skills, cutting edge technology and proven surgical techniques are utilised to optimise the treatment outcomes. This has resulted in SPARSH Hospital enjoying the fastest growing Arthroplasty practice. Based on the patient’s complaints, an individualized plan combining physical therapy, medications, and/or surgical treatment, is recommended.

Complex joint reconstruction to rectify a failed joint replacement - This is a challenging procedure for any orthopaedic surgeon requiring specialised expertise and equipment. The team at SPARSH Hospital goes to extraordinary lengths to ensure these patients leave the Hospital with a positive outcome.

Treatment of arthritis in younger individuals - Younger individuals can have painful and unstable joints following childhood disorders such as Congenital Hip Dysplasia, Legg-Perthes disease, fractures, infections and Avascular Necrosis. These challenging problems can be managed with non-operative measures, osteotomies, arthrodesis and rarely joint replacement surgery.

About Limb Reconstruction

The Limb Reconstruction Service at SPARSH hospital provides comprehensive evaluation and treatment of limb deformity secondary to long standing infection, neglected fractures and mal (badly united fractures).  The Service is recognized for its innovative treatment for congenital (by birth) deformity leading to shortening and deformity of limbs and is amoung the very few centres offering cosmetic limb lengthening procedures.

The Limb Reconstruction Service is comprised of a multidisciplinary group including Orthopaedic Surgeons (Dr Prasanth Tejwani and Dr Purushottam Lal), Microvascular surgeons, Physiotherapists and a pain management team.
