Lakshmi 'doing well' on path to recovery

Bangalore: Two-year-old Lakshmi, who underwent a rare and risky surgery to
separate her from a parasitic twin, has been responding well to the treatment
and had begun taking oral semi-solid feeds, doctors at the Bangalore-based Sparsh
Hospital said.
They said Lakshmi is cheerful, recovering well and the invasive monitoring on
her has been removed.
The doctors had picked Lakshmi from a remote village in Bihar and operated upon
her to rid of her parasitic twin. The toddler had been put through a 27-hour-long
surgery to remove her extraneous limbs and reconstruct some of her body parts.
A medical bulletin released by the hospital said Lakshmi is now able to
tolerate oral semi-solid feeds. Her clinical and biochemical parameters continue
to be within normal limits.
The entire family including parents Poonam and Shambu and brother Mithilesh
had been spending a lot of time with her over the last couple of days and the
child was responding well to this interaction.
Lakshmi had two pairs of legs and arms formed at either end of the two adjoining
torsos, thus appearing as a child with eight limbs.
