About Spine

The Spine Service at SPARSH Hospital is a specialised unit with expertise in the non-operative and operative management of spinal disorders from the cervical spine (neck) to the lumbo-sacral spine (lower back). The service believes in and practices a holistic approach to the management of spinal disorders. In keeping with this ideology a multi-disciplinary approach is followed. In addition to the two surgeons (Dr LG Gowrishankar Swamy and Dr Thomas Kishen), the Spine Service team is constituted by physiotherapists, pain counsellor, nurses and orthotists.

  5. Spinal surgery
  • Discectomy (removal of the intervertebral disc) and decompressions of nerve roots and spinal cord in the neck and lower back
  • Spinal fusion surgery in the neck and lower back
  • Disc replacement surgery
  • Correction of spinal deformities such as scoliosis and kyphosis
  • Reconstructions and palliative surgery for spinal tumours
  • Surgical treatment of spinal infections
  • Revision spinal surgery
Our close proximity to various specialised diagnostic services (Radiographs, CT and MRI scan, Bone scans and neurophysiological tests) in the campus and our close association with Orthopaedic surgeons, Neurosurgeons, Neurologists and other medical specialists allows us to offer a comprehensive service and tailor our treatment to the individual needs of our patients.
Dr.Thomas J Kishen

Fellowship in Spine Surgery (Australia)

Dr. Thomas Kishen is a Spine Surgeon working at Sparsh Hospital, Bangalore, India. He completed his basic Orthopaedic training (DOrtho) at Kasturba Medical College, Manipal and was awarded the ‘Dr. Premananda Nayak Gold Medal’ for standing first in the University. Following this, Dr Kishen trained at PSG Medical College, Coimbatore for the Diplomate of the National Board (Orthopaedics) and was awarded the ‘Professor M.V. Daniel Gold Medal’ for “Exemplary Commitment to Patient Care” during this period. He then went on to receive the ‘Dr. Balu Sankaran Gold Medal’ for “standing first in India in the “Diplomate of the National Board Exam” in Orthopaedics for the year 2001.
