SPARSH Trauma Fellowship

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, SPARSH Hospital offers Clinical Fellowships to post graduate master degree / diploma holders to pursue further training in Trauma surgery. The Fellowship Program has a clinical and research focus, with Fellows expected to be are involved in all aspects of patient care. Fellows will be exposed to a wide variety of Orthopaedic trauma surgery including microvascular surgery

Fellowship Objectives:
At the completion of this Fellowship, the trainee will be able to:

Clinical Skills

  • Demonstrate the ability to assess and resuscitate a trauma patient
  • Perform a complete primary and secondary survey as per Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) protocols
  • Arrive at an appropriate differential diagnosis and perform resuscitative procedures.
  • Order and interpret appropriate laboratory, radiological and other diagnostic procedures.
  • Produce an acceptable management plan.
  • Display knowledge of and competence in treating surgical and medical complications.
  • Provide a plan for patient follow-up.

Technical Skills

  • Exhibit proficiency and demonstrate technical competence in surgical and non-operative management of traumatic limb injury.
  • Show capacity for the correct use of instrumentation for fractures.

Cognitive Knowledge

  • Demonstrate a fundamental knowledge and understanding of the incidence, patho-mechanics, history, examination, resuscitation, diagnosis, investigation, management, prognosis, and complications in injuries of traumatic origin.
  • Participate in clinical orthopedic research.
  • Exhibit skills in the critical appraisal of scientific literature specifically in the design, methodology and evaluation of clinical studies.

Patient Care Duties

  • Fellows are expected to be in attendance at surgery to assist the Surgeon. Fellows are to attend the Surgeon's Outpatient Clinics.
  • Fellows will be on call in the Accident and Emergency department on a 1:4 basis.
  • The Fellows are expected to provide backup and be a resource to the surgical residents-in-training in the management of in-patient care and peri-operative patient care.

Trauma Rounds
Trauma rounds are held on a daily basis in conjunction with the Department of Orthopedics. Fellow participation and attendance in case/topic presentations are expected. In addition, the Fellow is encouraged to assist in the preparation of the monthly morbidity and mortality meetings.

Documentation
Fellows will be solely responsible for documentation of all in-patients and out-patient documentation of trauma cases. This includes filling up in-patient and out-patient notes, trauma scores for all patients, photographic and video documentation of their pre operative and post operative status etc.

Teaching
Fellows participate in educational endeavors - they are expected to participate in the teaching activities for residents and allied health professionals.

Research, Publications, Presentation and Other Academic Activities

  • As part of their program, Fellows will participate actively in research and academic activities.
  • Each Fellow will be expected to read at least two papers, one each in the local Bangalore Orthopaedic Society's monthly meeting and at the state conference.
  • The fellow is also expected to produce one paper each in Basic sciences and Clinical research, by the end of the fellowship.

Length of the Fellowship
The Fellowship Program is of One year duration starting from 1st of January 2010.

Deliverables
SPARSH Hospital will be submitting a monthly monitoring report on the progress made by the fellow.
