SPARSH Hospital's Tumour Orthopaedic Services was set up to focus on tumours and related oncology challenges. Treating both soft tissue and bone tumours the unit handles benign and sarcoma tumours of the musculoskeletal structure in bones, muscles and tissues. The most common form of sarcomas are Ewing's Sarcoma, Spindle cell carcinoma of the bone ,Chondrosarcoma , Osteosarcoma and soft tissue sarcomas ,
The unit also handles metastatic bone disease. Treatment of tumours follows a multi disciplinary approach using multiple skill sets of orthopaedic surgeons, pathologists, oncologists, radiologists, general physicians and nursing and medical support staff. This guarantees a plan that doesn't just cover treatment for the patient but also support for the patient's family. This also ensures that a customised treatment plan is developed for each patient with basis case parameters and inputs from the treatment team. Treatment is inclusive and care is taken to ensure that the patient'c care giver and family are educated on the treatment strategy so that as many decisions are taken collectively.Diagnosis is easier and moiré advanced with scanning systems like MRI, it is easier to diagnose sarcomas and therefore a proactive treatment plan can be implemented. Sections of the diseased bone can now be replaced with prostheses improving quality of life and avoiding disabling amputations. With the latest developments in chemotherapy and radiation intervention the chances of beating cancer are higher than ever. In addition to this modern physiotherapy also helps patients in getting back to life quicker during their post operative phase.
Treatment plans include;
Primary bone tumours and surgical intervention
Secondary bone tumours and intervertebral fusions in the spine
Limb salvage by excision
Reconstruction with allograft or autograft
Endoprosthetic replacements (EPR) and amputations
The Tumour Orthopaedic Service is driven by Dr. Prabhudev.
